Water quality news: WWF highlights glacier erosion
Oct 28 2009
The environmental charity made its comments as it noted that numerous areas in the high Alps are feeling the effects of climate change both "harder and faster" than many other regions.
It stated that the Monte Rosa massif, which sits between Switzerland and Italy and is one of the highest mountain ranges in Europe, is experiencing border erosion.
WWF noted that there are a total of nine glaciers on the expanse, including the Gorner, which is the second largest in the mountain range and is also the one that is shrinking the fastest.
"Glaciers might seem remote, but hundreds of millions of people worldwide depend on them for water supplies," concluded the organisation,
Earlier this month, WWF told delegates at the 13th World Forestry Congress that a clear plan to mitigate deforestation must be part of a deal at the United Nations Climate Change Conference in Copenhagen later this year.
