New Hydrocarbons-in-Water Monitor Designed for Quick and Accurate Hydrocarbon Detection

Thermo Fisher Scientific (USA), specialists in serving science, today announced the Thermo Scientific AroSpector Hydrocarbons-in-Water Monitor, a new instrument designed to provide continuous low-level detection of hydrocarbons that contain aromatic compounds, including benzene, toluene and xylene. Continuous monitoring and alerting ensures that operators can quickly implement proactive measures before hydrocarbons contaminate process streams or cause an unsafe condition in steam condensate or cooling water returns. This minimises equipment damage, maintenance time and expense and fines associated environmental contamination.

“Staying on top of and complying with environmental regulations is a significant requirement for our refining/petrochemical and wastewater customers, and our AroSpector monitor will help those operators avoid leaks and spills to mitigate risks,” said Doug Frye, product manager, process analysers at Thermo Fisher. “The AroSpector monitor can rapidly identify leaks in heat exchangers, preventing release of hazardous substances into the environment and contamination in wastewater facilities, including the wastewater being treated. At Thermo Fisher, we are committed to helping our customers improve their processes while remaining compliant with environmental regulations.”

The AroSpector monitor provides immediate notification of low-level detection of hydrocarbons containing aromatic compounds, enabling operators to take proactive measures before costly contamination occurs. This minimises equipment damage and maintenance due to corrosion, scale formation and fouling. A high-concentration alarm provides immediate notification of hydrocarbon detection, and a configurable alarm can be set to provide an alarm output at any point an end user requires.

The instrument is also the only monitor of its kind that comes standard with a cleaning and calibrations solutions rack, reducing the initial capital outlay. The AroSpector monitor is a unique self-cleaning and self-calibrating system, ensuring accurate results without the maintenance other systems require. The instrument is highly configurable to meet qualitative measurement needs and is available with three factory calibration ranges: 0-20 ppm, 0-100 ppm and 0-500 ppm.

Other key features include a no-plug, no-pyrolysis design that offers nearly maintenance-free sampling and ensures maximum monitor uptime without the danger of plugging or shutting down due to combustion failures or blockage of sample flows. The instrument can also operate without external utility gases (except hazardous area models).
