New IoT Web-Enabled CA900 Titration Analyser Measures Alkalinity Automatically and Accurately

Feb 01 2018

Engineers and laboratory technicians responsible for maintaining alkaline and pH levels in balance to support a wide range of municipal and industrial water-based processes will find the new IoT web-enabled CA900 Titration Analyser from Electro-Chemical Devices (ECD) automates the process of routine alkalinity measurement with a simple, accurate and cost-effective approach.

Maintaining water quality with the proper balance of pH and alkalinity levels is essential in many different processes—everything from drinking water to wastewater processes, as well as in irrigation water, water-based beverages and pharmaceuticals, electronics manufacturing and more. Alkalinity is a measure of the capacity of water to neutralise acids and affects pH levels in water. It occurs naturally in ground water and its levels are influenced by rocks and soils, salts, certain plant activities and in some cases by industrial wastewater discharges.

ECD’s advanced CA900 Titration Analyser for alkalinity measurement is so easy to install and start up that a technician can do it in less than 15 minutes. All that is necessary is to perform simple connections of the sample, waste and reagent lines and then power up the factory pre-calibrated analyser. Wall mounting hardware comes standard with each analyser, but an optional bench top stand with reagent holder also is available.

Four different ECD factory pre-set alkalinity calibration ranges are available for the CA900 Titration Analyser: 0 to 50 ppm, 50 to 200 ppm, 200-1000 ppm, and 0 to>1000 ppm. Users simply order the desired calibration range, and the analyser comes ready to go right out of the box. The analyser’s full-featured design also comes with four 4-20 analogue outputs, an Ethernet digital output and four user-configurable alarm relays.

Accessing information or customizing analysis routines are both easily accomplished with the CA900 Titration Analyser’s user-friendly menu structure and touchscreen interface. The analyser also can be web-enabled as a powerful internet of things (IoT) tool for remote monitoring and interfacing with personal handheld devices such as controllers, mobile phones, tablets, laptops and computers.

To determine and maintain water quality, accurately measuring the alkalinity of the water is critical to assess its relationship and impact on pH levels. Titration analysis with the CA900 Analyser calculates alkalinity by dispensing known doses of a titrant fluid into a reaction cell while monitoring the pH level to its end point. The analyser then uses the titrant concentration and amount dispensed to calculate the level of alkalinity measurement.

The CA900 Titration Analyser typically performs a single alkalinity measurement per analysis cycle. Its standard program sequence consists of a cleaning cycle, sample acquisition, monitoring of pH, the addition of the titrant fluid, mixing the fluid, calculation of results and data storage. The desired frequency of analysis between cycles can be easily modified to the requirements of the user’s process.

The versatile CA900 Titration analyser is designed with up to four different sample lines that can be connected to the analyser. Numerous analysis configurations can be easily set up and programmed depending on the specific process control application and/or environmental or other compliance requirements.

Measuring alkalinity levels with ECD’s CA900 Titration Analyser is especially important for the effective treatment of both municipal drinking water and wastewater, where it can affect the wastewater anaerobic digestion process. Alkalinity in surface water generally results from the presence of calcium carbonate, CaCO3, which has been leached from rocks and soil and then enters surface or ground water systems.
