Gas sensors
20 Years of Swiss Gas Sensors
Jul 17 2015
MEMBRAPOR (Switzerland) is celebrating its 20th anniversary this year and would like to take the opportunity to thank all their loyal long-time customers.
The year was 1995, when in a small laboratory in Zurich a new type of gas diffusion electrode was invented and the first Swiss electrochemical gas sensors were developed. A year later, 2 patent applications were filed and subsequently granted. With the introduction of their unique ammonia sensor and highly selective gas sensors in general, the young company started to supply OEMs of gas sensing solutions.
In 1997, MEMBRAPOR exhibited at the Sensor+Test in Nuremberg and attracted plenty of attention. During that time a heavy consolidation occurred within the gas sensor market and the young company established itself as an independent sensor manufacturer.
At the beginning of this century, gas sensors from the Swiss company were already dominant in several applications. In 2003 the R&D team was doubled and the production capacity was expanded with a second site. In 2004 a further patent was filed and successfully defended. Ever since then one cannot imagine the gas sensor market without MEMBRAPOR's novel R-type NH3 sensor. Sensors for more exotic gases like HCl, PH3, SiH4 and HCN followed. MEMBRAPOR exhibited a continuous growth and moved in 2009 to a new site, twice the size of the previous.
In 2011 an electrochemical oxygen sensor of the newest RoHS compliant, long-lived generation was introduced. A further milestone was reached in 2012 when the MEMBRAPOR product range exceeded 200 types of gas sensors for 20 different gases.
Since then the R&D team has doubled again, the production site was expanded further and many more new sensors were developed. To commemerate the anniversary of MEMBRAPOR, the company web site was completely redesigned this year. All important information can be easily found, and the site is also accessible with mobile devices.
