New Book Guides Users of the Eddy Covariance Method for Measuring Ecosystem Gas Exchange

Jul 19 2013

LI-COR (USA) Biosciences announces publication of "Eddy Covariance Method for Scientific, Industrial, Agricultural, and Regulatory Applications: A Field Book on Measuring Ecosystem Gas Exchange and Areal Emission Rates".

The author is Dr. George Burba, LI-COR Principal Scientist and co-author of "A Brief Practical Guide to Eddy Covariance Flux Measurements" (published November 2010). This earlier guide has been integrated into college curriculums and can be found in the libraries of over 20 major research universities, including Cambridge, Max Planck Institute, McGill, MIT, Princeton, and Stanford.

Building on the theory and general principles outlined in the 2010 book, the new 2013 book is significantly expanded and restructured based on new developments. It includes additional content on flux corrections, instrumentation, EddyPro processing software, and other concepts.

“Using non-technical language, this book guides the reader through the theory of the eddy covariance method, and then step-by-step through experiment design, implementation, data processing, and analysis,” said Dr. Burba. “It also incorporates academic resources and references, and provides useful material for lectures, handouts, teaching, and field-training of personnel.”

The eddy covariance method is used to directly measure gas emission rates and the exchange of gases, aerosols and energy between the earth’s surface and the atmosphere. Common measurements include carbon dioxide, water vapor, methane, and energy fluxes. Applications include ecological and climate change research; greenhouse gas, industrial, and landfill monitoring; carbon capture, utilisation and storage; and agricultural applications such as irrigation and water usage.
