Vaisala have just been given the go ahead to bring Ethiopia’s weather and climate monitoring system up to date to enable the East African nation to enhance their sustainable development and to be prepared for climate change and the effects of weather with the latest forecasting technology. The project has be given the requisite approvals from both Finnish and Ethiopian authorities and Vaisala, in partnership with the Finnish Meteorological Institute (FMI) will install and implement this system for Ethiopia’s National Meteorological Agency over the next 2 to 3 years, followed on by a 3 year maintenance and support contract. This contract is worth €13M, but the capability to forecast extreme weather early will be priceless for Ethiopia.
Harri Pietaril, FMI’s Head of Expert Services stated, “Through this unique Finnish public-private partnership, we are able to deliver a seamless integrated solution. Vaisala’s high-end observation system integrated with FMI’s state of the art forecast production system covers the whole value chain of the National Meteorology Agency”.
