Is Bisphenol A In My Water?
Mar 09 2010
Debate continues on the chemical compound Bisphenol A (BPA) regarding its effects on human health and whether it requires regulation. Used in industrial activities, particularily in resins and plastics used in food and beverage packaging materials, BPA has been the subject of numerous studies, many linked to human health concerns. One study estimates there are detectable levels of BPA in more than 90% of the US population.
Reacting to this news, in 2008, Canada declared Bisphenol A a hazardous substance, the American Medical Association called for more studies, and the European Food Safety Authority began assessing human health risks. Acting on this increased interest, ASTM International recently published Method D7574-09 – “Standard Test Method for Determination of Bisphenol A in Environmental Waters by Liquid Chromatography / Tandem Mass Spectrometry.” This method was developed and validated by the US Environmental Protection Agency using Environmental Solutions from Waters Corporation.
Providing fast, sensitive results, Waters breakthrough ACQUITY UPLC technology offers scientists a new tool in their search for answers about this important compound. Waters provides Environmental Analysis Kits, which include columns, vials, and sample preparation products, that are included in the published method.
As a world leader in separation science, Waters Corporation works with governments, research organizations and industrial partners worldwide to resolve new and emerging environmental concerns. Employing cutting-edge technologies and techniques, Waters has solutions for many of the challenges in the news today, including BPA, PFCs, and Pharmaceuticals and Personal Care Products.
