New Method Offers Efficient Pollution Source Tracking in Wastewater
Feb 01 2012
The SorbisenseTM method is a Danish developed and patented method of passive sampling from Sorbisense. The method is very efficient for wastewater and sewers for leak detection and for the monitoring and source tracking of hazardous chemicals including; hydrocarbons, chlorinated solvents, pesticides, and heavy metals.
Continuous sampling can be performed in wells and inlet to wells to obtain a high security in the tracking of periodic discharges. The Sorbisense method is tested and validated in cooperation with Danish and Dutch authorities and advisors, among them Danish Hydrological Institute and Deltares, The Netherlands. The laboratory analyses of the sampling units are validated by leading European analytical laboratories.
The Sorbisense method is suitable for monitoring periodic discharges of hazardous chemicals in sewer systems. By mounting SorbiCellTM cartridges in sewers and drainage systems over a period of 1-2 weeks a cost-effective and precise monitoring of the average discharge concentrations is accomplished.
The monitoring process should be commenced in the main sections to accomplish a general delineation of the sewer/drainage network. After this, find the source of contamination or leaks by investigating smaller and more targeted sections.
Sorbisense Sockets are available in varying pipe diameters and are mounted to the end of inlet pipes. Sorbisense WW50 systems are placed on the bottom of pumping wells with a minimum of 50 cm of water and can be installed directly from the surface.
When using the WW Source Tracking Kit, the SorbiCells are mounted on a wire and lowered from the surface in flow wells with only intermittent flow or small discharges. All montage systems are reusable. For each measurement period one or more SorbiCell must be used depending on number of chemicals to be analysed.
SorbiCells are mounted at the inlet of drain wells using a Sorbisense Socket (see Fig. 1), in flow-through wells using the WW Source Tracking Kit (see figure 2), and in pumping wells using a Sorbisense WW50 (see Fig. 3).
SorbiCells are sent to the laboratory for chemical analysis, in a similar way to water samples. Please ask your local laboratory or contact Sorbisense. The limits of detection are generally comparable to water samples, and sensitivity increases with increased sample volume.
