International water resources management

Process measuring technology is becoming increasingly important in purification plants and wastewater treatment plants. Increased awareness of both the environment and health, intensified quality requirements and not least the increasingly central question of cost have resulted in new guidelines and requirements calling for a more precise quantification of processes. Flow volumes and parameters must be detected and documented more comprehensively and precisely.

Planning engineers for wastewater treatment plants face challenges of unprecedented complexity. On the one hand, they must keep an eye on constantly changing requirements when planning the plant. Above and beyond that, they must reconcile these requirements with the technological developments in a wide variety of measuring methods. The measurement technology aspect of plant planning is taking on an increasingly interdisciplinary character. It is no longer sufficient for planners to be familiar with just the major technologies - instead they must take into account the advantages and disadvantages of all available measuring methods for each individual measuring station.

Given the large number of alternatives, many users find it difficult to decide on a certain measuring device. To make it easier, KROHNE (Germany) has offered the "Planning tool for the creation of specifications in the field of flow, level, analysis, pressure and temperature" since last year and it is now available in English for international projects and tenders.   The tool helps planners of wastewater treatment plants when setting up and designing the measuring points. Both language versions can be found on the Internet at www.krohne-water.com. The tool can be used to quickly create and save tender texts, data sheets, operating manuals, installation and operating conditions and CAD drawings.

Every new user receives a free introduction to the planning tool by a KROHNE staff member, who gives a quick overview of the tool, indicating where necessary information can be found. "We introduce planners to the contents and handling of the application" explains Michael Rumpf, project manager for the planning tool at KROHNE. "The time invested in training quickly pays off in the form of considerable reductions in terms of planning expense, quicker implementation and a better equipped plant.“
