Important Technical Announcement from Hauraton

The European Water Framework Directive requires Authorities to manage water resources better and clean-up storm water commonly polluted with hydrocarbons, de-icing salt and heavy metals such as Copper and Zinc, before it enters a local watercourse, surrounding land or catchment area.

The Hauraton DRAINFIX®CLEAN filter-bed drainage channel system is designed to directly cleanse polluted storm water. In a relatively short time, pollutants, particles and organic matter from the surrounding drained surface, wash into the channel system, penetrate the CARBOTEC 60 filter-bed and begin to form a filter cake. As the filter medium continues to mature, micro-organisms and small creatures invade and start a soil forming process; this absorbs the captured pollutants and speeds their break down. The channels are sized for this stage of the cycle, providing sufficient water retention volume to ensure there is no back-pressure or overflow of the system.

Minimal maintenance requirement
Depending on the application, only the filter cake needs to be removed after 10 to 20 years. The CARBOTEC 60 filter-bed substratum would normally be left in position and used for much longer.

To facilitate removal of the filter cake, DRAINFIX®CLEAN features SIDE-LOCK®, a patented boltless system that allows the Class D400 to F900 ductile iron gratings to be removed quickly and re-fitted easily. Once a 500mm long grating is positioned over the channel, foot pressure is simply applied. A loud click is then heard which confirms the cover is securely locked. The cover can be removed using a large screwdriver inserted into a discreet leverage point. The system has proved to be 90% quicker than any other fixing method available. In practice, 10 metres of cover can be removed in about 90 seconds with just 70 seconds to replace all 20 covers.

Testing has shown DRAINFIX®CLEAN removes nearly 100% of the common pollutants found in storm water run-off.
The DRAINFIX®CLEAN system far exceeds current European requirements for the removal of pollutants from storm water run-off. Field tests found very little polluted material was removed by separators or retention systems; the channels’ incorporating a CARBOTEC 60 filter-bed was the only system to work effectively over a long period. This technically advanced filter-bed channel system was developed in collaboration with a number of European Universities and subsequently tested under severe, real life conditions over many years. Extensive testing proved the system’s superior effectiveness by guaranteeing maximum reliability.

First UK installation of DRAINFIX®CLEAN
The DRAINFIX® CLEAN filter-bed channel system has been installed in a 400m² car park at Darwen Vale High School Sports Arena. The system is designed to directly cleanse storm water run-off and ensures pollutants do not enter a local SUDS scheme.

A DRAINFIX®CLEAN samples pack and explanatory leaflet is now available from Hauraton, with an online video demonstrating the effectiveness of the system via www.hauraton.co.uk – select SERVICE then click PRODUCT VIDEOS.
