Wastewater spill leads to company being fined

Oct 14 2008

A firm has been fined a total of $50,000 (£28,474) for spilling 5,000 gallons of wastewater in Florida, it has been reported.

Lockheed Martin, whose plant in question is located in Tallevast, Florida, was found to be in breach of environmental laws.

Soil around the plant's pump system was found to be contaminated down to a depth of six feet by the Department of Environmental Protection (DEP).

Southwest district director for the DEP Deborah Getzoff commented: "The DEP is committed to enforcing the state's environmental legislations and we are confident that Lockheed Martin has taken these violations seriously".

The firm now has 45 days to pay the fine and has agreed to replace the damaged pump that caused the water to leak out.

According to Lockheed Martin's website, the global company achieved sales of $41.9 billion last year.
