Wastewater contamination 'may force popular park to close'
Feb 23 2009
Manuel Antonio National Park may be facing an uncertain future, as the Health Ministry has issued its owners with a closure order and granted the environment and energy ministry ten days to improve the problem.
A recent inspection of the park found that wastewater and raw sewage was being dumped from the rangers' living quarters directly into the woodland areas of the park, reported the Latin American Herald Tribune.
Thousands of tourists visit the beauty spot every year and it provides a significant stimulus to the country's economy.
Head of the park Belfort Cubillo stated that the problem has been registered previously, but the park did not receive enough funding to address it.
In related news, those in the area of Karumba, Australia, have been advised by the local council that drinking water is safe following recent heavy flooding, reported ABC News.
