The University of Johannesburg is to work with scientists in the area to improve the quality of the city's water, it has been revealed.

Johannesburg Water has signed a memorandum of understanding with the educational institution that will bolster water research and explore methods of ensuring the city's residents receive safer water supplies.

Professor Derek van der Merwe of the university, stated: "All of us want safe and secure water and we have an obligation to assist Johannesburg Water to achieve this."

He added that though the university has facilities, the input and support Johannesburg Water is capable of providing is integral to its goals.

In other water news, British firm Anglian Water agreed to ensure that residents' homes are restored to their former states as the construction of a new £4.7 million sewer in Norwich has caused damage to properties.
