Review highlights positive role played by Ofwat
Jul 07 2011
An independent review into the role of Ofwat has suggested that the UK’s water quality is in safe hands.
In the assessment of the regulator’s performance, David Gray - who led the investigation, which was launched by the UK and Welsh governments - stated that no major overhaul was needed to meet future challenges.
The report suggested that the national system has worked well since it was privatised, although there is still room for improvement.
Indeed, the body believes Ofwat needs to work more closely with other organisations within the sector.
Findings from the analysis have been released ahead of the publication of the Water White Paper later this year, in which the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs will respond to the review.
It was also suggested that the Consumer Council for Water should continue to represent utility customers.
In February, Ofwat announced that the average water bill would increase by approximately 4.6 per cent this year - which is the equivalent of around £16 - due to the rising rate of inflation.
