More people may clamp down on waste water following price rise

An increasing number of homeowners may be looking at ways to reduce their waste water output as prices are set to increase.

Water suppliers across the UK have warned consumers to expect fluctuations in their bills due to the 4.7 per cent hike in inflation.

The news could lead more people to consider installing water meters, so that savings can be made by reducing the amount of waste water being lost.

However, Ofwat has suggested that the rises have been unavoidable and firms are not simply cashing in by increasing prices.

Chief executive officer Regina Finn believes continued investment in the industry will ultimately benefit customers, as rivers will become cleaner.

"Companies are investing more than ever before, £22 billion. That's more than £935 for every property in England and Wales," she remarked.

Last week, the Consumer Council announced that it wanted water boards to demonstrate how customers' money was being spent to improve the quality of water supplies.
