Michigan wastewater is 'contaminating wells'

Wastewater from food-processing plants in Michigan has polluted wells which supply water to residents in rural areas of Michigan, it has been reported.

Government officials allege that it is the local plants, which turn raw crops into manufactured goods, that are at fault for inhabitants having their pets killed, their plumbing damaged and difficulties selling or renting their properties.

According to state environmental authorities, residents are unlikely to experience serious health issues as a result of the contamination, although little is known about the possible long-term effects.

"It's going to take years to clean up this mess," Kari Craton told the Associated Press.

Ms Craton persuaded Erin Brockovich to help her local community after her neighbours complained of foul odours and flies.

A renowned environmental campaigner, the work of Erin Brockovich inspired a successful film of the same name in 2000, which the lawyer claims caused her to become a "reluctant public figure".
