Future of Gloucestershire landfill site uncertain
Oct 27 2010
Earlier this week, Whitehall confirmed that it will not give the £92 million finance needed for the Shire Hall initiative, which will see the building of an incinerator or a biological treatment factory.
Gloucestershire County Council's cabinet member for waste Stan Waddington told the newspaper that a "lot of work" needs to be done to ensure the project can be pursued.
"Whatever happens, we have to find an alternative to landfill for dealing with Gloucestershire's household waste, so there's no question of us dropping the project and doing nothing," he stated.
Gloucestershire County Council is likely to be keen to see the developments go ahead as landfill sites in the area receive more than £36 million worth of aluminium every year, while nearly half of residents' household waste cannot be composted.
