Firm launches wastewater campaign to prevent blockages
Aug 23 2011
Field operations manager and chief sewer flusher at Thames Water Rob Smith has said that utility companies are facing a constant battle to keep sewage lines clear of debris.
He suggested that too many people are putting cotton wool or wet wipes down the lavatory.
A whole array of items have found their way into the system, with some of the strangest being a hand grenade, gas bottles and car parts.
The company's head of programme for the transfer of private sewers Nick Sumption agreed that residents need to change their habits.
"It is important for customers that we can keep the cost of the bills down if they behave [and] bin it, don't block it," he remarked, while also telling people not to put fat or other non-degradable substances down the loo.
Last month, six million households in London were issued warnings against "sewer abuse".
