£110 million to be invested in Yorkshire's wastewater treatment works
Nov 05 2010
Yorkshire Water has announced that it will recover 50 miles of the county's coastline to 'blue flag' status from Withernsea to Staithes.
It stated that the money will be put into creating better sewage treatment facilities, preventing agricultural waste from leaking onto the beaches and making sure they are maintained to a high standard.
The chief executive of the county's tourist body Welcome to Yorkshire Gary Verity has said that it would be an accomplishment if the entire coastline was given 'blue flag' status.
"However, we will only be able to achieve this ambitious goal if the various organisations whose activities can impact on bathing water quality come together and work together," he noted.
Joining forces with Yorkshire Water are the Environment Agency, local authority bodies, the National Farmers' Union and the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs.
Beaches along the coastline that already have 'blue flag' status include popular holiday destinations Bridlington North and South Beaches, Whitby West Cliff Beach and Scarborough North Bay.
