Latest Technologies for Water to be Showcased at IWEX 2015
Mar 17 2015
ABB’s (USA) stand at IWEX (G26, NEC Birmingham, 21st – 23rd April 2015) will feature a major emphasis on TOTEX, demonstrating how the company’s instrumentation, drives, motors and service offerings can help water companies to take a holistic approach to optimizing their network efficiency.
A fully automated interactive panel will show how ABB’s equipment can be integrated to provide
customers with complete solutions for monitoring and controlling water supplies. The panel will
feature a selection of instruments, including the new Aztec 400 transmitter, plus variable speed
drives, electric motors and control equipment.
The stand will also feature examples of ABB’s latest technologies for water and wastewater
processes.
Products on display will include the AquaMaster 3 with WITS (Water Industry Telemetry Standard)
DNP3 based open protocol. Based on tried and tested network technology, WITS DNP3 enables
communication between different types of data acquisition and control equipment. Using the
AquaMaster 3 with WITS, users can download a high-speed, high-resolution log to investigate any
water network anomalies in conjunction with detection methods such as step testing, burst / pressure
transients or nightline monitoring.
By offering access to a raft of operational and maintenance data, including advanced diagnostics, the
AquaMaster 3 with WITS can help ensure maintenance personnel are properly equipped with the
information they need to resolve any issues.
Coupled with the AquaMaster 3’s unrivalled accuracy across an extremely wide range, plus power
options including wind and solar, the flowmeter provides a powerful tool for pinpointing leakage in
water distribution networks.
The AquaMaster 3 will be joined by Katronic’s range of KATflow ultrasonic clamp-on flowmeters.
Established in the UK in 1996, Katronic has developed a reputation for its high quality clamp-on
flowmeters and market-leading customer service.
Featuring an intuitive menu, instrument setup wizard and the innovative Audible Sensor Positioning
Assistant, the KATflow range makes the use of clamp-on ultrasonic flowmeters easier than ever
before.
Also on display is ABB’s new range of WIMES compliant low voltage electric motors. The motors were
designed specifically to meet the UK’s Water Industry Mechanical and Electrical Specification
(WIMES 3.03 issue 6), created by The Pump Centre in conjunction with end users, consultants,
contractors and manufacturers, including ABB.
ABB’s WIMES compliant motor range is available in cast iron frame sizes from 80 to 450 (frame size
80 to 180 also available in aluminium) with power ratings from 0.75 up to 1000 kW. Options available
include premium efficiency (IE3) and super premium efficiency (IE4) variants.
Alongside it is ABB’s SynRM (synchronous reluctance motor) and drive package for the water industry. The package offers the benefits of a premium motor control alongside the highest levels of motor performance, giving ultimate efficiency and reliability to optimise pump system cost of ownership.
SynRM offers good partial load efficiency performance for all pumping applications, making it suitable for end users in the water and wastewater industry. With no permanent magnets, the motor is much easier to maintain and significantly cheaper than permanent magnet motors. Unlike a traditional squirrel cage motor there are virtually no power losses in the rotor, meaning it runs considerably cooler and more efficiently than a squirrel cage rotor. This reduces the overall motor losses by as much as 40 percent, which means lower winding and bearing temperatures, fewer points for failure and less downtime.
ABB will also be using the stand to promote its service capabilities for its instrumentation products, including its new range of analytical hire panels. With options for measuring aluminium, iron, manganese, high and low level ammonia, phosphate and fluoride, the hire panels offer the ideal solution for short term, emergency or evaluation measurement purposes.
“The shift towards a total life cost focus and a holistic approach to water network management marks a major change in the way that water utilities will be selecting equipment for future projects,” says Tim Door, General Sales Manager for ABB Measurement and Analytics in the UK and Ireland. “A major emphasis of our stand will therefore be on demonstrating how ABB can help to boost efficiency across all areas, from reduced energy consumption through to enhanced data collection from accurate measurement that can be used to optimise network performance.”
