Greenpeace appeals to sportswear giants over Chinese water quality

Greenpeace has urged adidas and Nike to take action, after it discovered the pair have links to a facility that is damaging water quality in Chinese rivers.

Members of the organisation have conducted investigations, which included testing wastewater samples from the two textile factories in question.

The team discovered that the Yangtze and Pearl River had been infected with a range of chemicals that can affect the hormones of a human being.

Greenpeace has targeted Nike and adidas because it feels the huge firms have the power and influence to put an end to the pollution, although other brands such as Puma, Abercrombie & Fitch, Lacoste and H&M were found to have links to the sites.

Water pollution is a big problem across China, Greenpeace has claimed, with 70 per cent of its lakes, rivers and reservoirs blighted by unwanted chemicals.

Earlier this week, the China National Offshore Oil Corporation was forced to clean up an oil spill in Bohai Bay, which is situated off the north-east coast.
