PEFTEC Seminar - "Bioremediation of Hydrocarbon Contaminated Soil"
Sep 12 2015
Prof Mamdouh F. Abdel-sabour from Saudi ASMA Environmental Solution (SAES), presents "Bioremediation of Hydrocarbon Contaminated Soil"
The soluble compounds of diesel (benzene, toluene, ethyl benzene, and xylenes which are known as BTEX) are toxic to aquatic life as well as animals and humans. Diesel released into the environment can contaminate ground water; degrade potable water supplies and ruin of fisheries. Hydrocarbons in the soil are considered toxic when they extent concentrations greater than 100 µgg/g soil.
Treatment of oil-contaminated soils is necessary to protect water supplies, human health, and environmental quality; but because of limited funds, clean-up costs are often unwarranted. Enormous amount of financial and human resources are being devoted to the mitigation and clean-up of hydrocarbon-soil pollution. The natural recovery of crude oil from polluted soils is slow, populations affected by such cases are denied of their agricultural lands, a long time.
This review paper focuses on the application of biological methods to remediate oil contaminated land, to promote health and safety of the working and broader environment.
This talk will take place on Thursday 19th November, 10.45-11.15am, Room 1.
