Synthesis of iron - Modified Zeolite for Arsenic Removal from Groundwater

Mr Tung Nguyen Son, from the VNU University of Science, presents "Synthesis of iron - Modified Zeolite for Arsenic Removal from Groundwater"

Arsenic, a slow poison, has contaminated the environment from both anthropogenic and natural sources over Vietnam and its exposure has caused adverse health effects on human beings, thus becoming a national concern. It is widely distributed and observed in the natural environments, particularly in groundwater. The removal of arsenic from groundwater is a persistent challenge in this area where long-term cumulative arsenic exposure is a matter of concern. In this study, along with the promising results, Iron - modified Zeolite (Potassium Aluminum Silicate Unnamed Zeolite) was created from coal fly ash in Pha Lai thermo-electrical factory (Hai Duong province). The samples of 200 µg/L solution after treatment showed a great reduction in arsenic concentration with an average reduction of 80%. Besides, the material could work on a wide range of pH and had the maximum adsorption capacity of 15.98 µg/g. Iron - modified Zeolite had changes in the physical and chemical properties and a new anion adsorption site on the surface; therefore, the material became an effective adsorbent. Furthermore, it was a new recycle method for the waste - fly ash.

This talk will take place Thursday 19th November, 11.30-12, Room 1.
