Environmental experts dye river green to determine water quality

Green experts have released dye into a river in Wales in an attempt to conduct environmental analysis on its water quality.

Environment Agency Wales warned residents in Abergavenny that they need not have worried if they saw the River Gavenny turn green last week, as it was merely part of their experiment to see whether pipes leading to the waterway were correctly linked.

Officers used dye tracing to find homes that had wrongly connected drains by following the trail of the green water.

Environment Agency Wales' Brendan Hardiman said that a number of residents contacted the organisation to report pollution.

However, he stated: "There is nothing to worry about - the dye is harmless but does help us trace misconnections."

Earlier this week, the agency helped remove debris clogging up a vital drainage ditch in Wales, which could have resulted in hundreds of homes being flooded if the weather worsened.

This involved getting rid of truck tyres and trolleys from the Balderton Brook in Sealand.
