Firm that breached environmental legislation 'has improved since penalty'

Oct 05 2009

The operators of a Caythorpe recycling centre who were found guilty of violating environmental legislation have improved since the incident took place, according to the prosecuting organisation.

Environment Agency officer David Hutchinson said that it has been acknowledged that Mid UK Recycling has taken action since allowing bad smells to escape from its site, which has included improvements in their management of the centre.

His comments follow the prosecution of the company for causing upset to local residents due to the nauseating stench that was emanating from the business.

"It is clear that failures on the site at the time of the incident led to odours that had a significant impact of the local community," stated Mr Hutchinson.

He added that the agency - which is an executive non-departmental public body responsible to the secretary of state for environment, food and rural affairs - will not hesitate to take enforcement action should similar cases arise in future.
