Crawley firm to pay thousands for violating environmental legislation

Sep 22 2009

A Crawley-based company that violated environmental legislation has been ordered to pay £23,406.

Dualit Limited, a privately-owned family firm in the electrical catering and domestic appliances trade, failed to comply with the Producer Responsibility Obligations (Packaging Waste) Regulations 2007.

The business also neglected to produce evidence that it had recovered and recycled the stipulated amount of packaging waste.

Dualit has now pleaded guilty to failing to register with the Environment Agency and to meet its requirements.

Investigating officer Laura Dowsett said that the firm was unaware of the regulations until it was contacted but since then, has co-operated fully with the investigation.

"However, ignorance of the regulations is not a defence so we strongly advise companies to keep abreast of environmental legislation," she stated.

The Environment Agency aims to play a central role in delivering the environmental priorities of central government and the Welsh Assembly through its functions and roles.
