Co-op's office waste 'would otherwise go into landfill'

Oct 13 2009

The Cooperative Group's office waste would go into landfill if the company did not recycle it into toilet tissue and then sell it, according to one eco expert.

A spokesperson from non-profit environmental organisation Waste Watch said that the Co-op provides a great example to other multinational corporations by generating a profit out of a product made from recycled materials.

Her comments follow the publication of research by Friends of the Earth, which revealed that if firms recycled products instead of sending them to landfill, it would cut down on greenhouse gas emissions, reduce the need to import good from overseas and generate new jobs.

"A lot of large businesses are trying to do what they can to recycle because it's better for the environment and there are benefits for their shareholders - potentially they can see some kind of profit from doing that," stated the representative.

This news comes after Plastics Europe recently reported that 12.2 million tonnes of the continent's plastics waste still ends up in landfill.
