Revolutionary Technology for Highly Accurate Lightning Detection

Jan 25 2010

Lightning detection is no new invention, but recent developments in technology enable new realms of cost-efficiency and performance. Vaisala’s (Finland) central processing software shows how.

Lightning can be located through the use of remote sensors that detect the signals emitted by lightning discharges. The sensors then send the information to a central processor that computes the information and determines where the lightning strike occurred.

Vaisala, an environmental measurement company based in Finland, has extended its range of central processing software for lightning detection sensors, introducing Total Lightning Processor™ Series TLP100 and TLP200 on a Linux® operating system. For the user, this means added flexibility, ease of use and lower ownership costs.

Scientifically validated accuracy

Both TLP™ series are based on Vaisala’s patented location algorithm with propagation correction services, locating lightning activity with a precision range of 250 meters or less. The location accuracy has been scientifically validated in cooperation with third parties.

The TLP™ provides for continuous monitoring of the network performance as well as a user-friendly web-based interface, which together can save up to 80% of the user’s time in analysing raw data and overall network performance – resulting in substantial returns on investment.

Vaisala’s expertise in lightning detection is based on extensive experience and investment in R&D. For the past 20 years, the company has owned and operated a lightning detection network covering the entire United States, and earlier this year, Vaisala introduced a new and unique global lightning detection service. The worldwide uniform coverage of the Global Lightning Dataset GLD360 spans also oceanic regions, which have before suffered from a shortage of real-time weather observations.
