Fifth Annual U.S. Symposium at JASIS Organised by Pittcon’s Program Chairman Hub MacDonald

Pittcon is pleased to announce that the 2015 Program Chairman, Hub MacDonald, and colleague Koichiro Matsuda, Horiba Scientific, have organised a session on nanotechnology for presentation at JASIS on September 5, 2014.. JASIS, Asia’s largest analytical and scientific instruments show, will be held September 3-5, 2014, in Makuhari Messe, Japan.

The four speakers in this U.S. symposium, “Thinking Small: New Tools for Bioanalysis from Single Molecules to Single Cells” will present their use of nanotechnology to advance their research in biological and biochemical analysis.

After an introduction by JAIMA President Shigehiko Hattori, Dr. MacDonald will begin with the “Historical Perspective of Nanotechnology” that will include a discussion of the controversies that have occurred over the years.

The University of Michigan’s Professor Robert Kennedy will follow with “The Nanoliter Lab: Using Droplet Microfluidics for High-Throughput Chemical Analysis, Sensing, and Method Interfacing” which will address the production and use of droplet microfluidics for high throughput chemical analysis.

Professor J. MIchael Ramsey, University of North Carolina, continues with “Advancing Chemical and Biochemical Measurements using Micro- and Nanofabricated Devices“ which will cover the applications of micro- and nano- fabricated devices in chemical and biochemical measurements.

Professor Jonathan Sweedler, University of Illinois, will finish this symposium with “Using Mass Spectrometry to Characterise Brain Neurochemistry: Assaying Small Brain Regions Down to Individual Cells” This session will be a discussion of mass spectrometry used to characterise brain neurochemistry regions as small as individual cells.

Dr. Koichiro Matsuda will make closing remarks.

Hub MacDonald received a Bachelor’s of Science in Chemistry at Wheeling Jesuit University and his Masters of Science in Inorganic Chemistry and Doctorate of Philosophy in Analytical Chemistry at the University of Michigan.

His career includes positions at Koppers Co. as a research scientist and laboratory director at Senate Environmental Testing Laboratory and later, for the Engineering Services Divisions of Westinghouse Electric Corporation. Most recently Hub was an adjunct chemistry professor at La Roche College in Pittsburgh, PA.

Hub will be available for interviews and to answer questions at the Pittcon booth. If you are interested in pre-arranging a meeting, please contact publicity@pittcon.org
