WWF calls for environmental analysis on fracking
Nov 02 2011
The World Wildlife Fund (WWF) has called for the exploration of shale gas to be halted in the UK until thorough environmental analysis has been completed.
Members of the organisation are concerned that the process known as fracking is having a negative impact on ground, water and air quality.
It also highlighted the findings of a recent report, which showed a minor earthquake in the north-west of England had been caused by fracking.
The group also said a study by the International Energy Agency had revealed the growing clamour for shale gas will result in increased climate change, with temperatures predicted to rise by 3.5 degrees C.
Head of energy policy at WWF-UK Nick Molho said the research was worrying.
"We're extremely concerned by the way in which shale gas is being painted as a 'wonder gas' which will slash energy bills in Britain and help tackle climate change," he commented.
The WWF recently voiced its frustration, after hearing plans to construct a £1 billion carbon capture plant in Scotland had been shelved.
