Welsh green investment is 'win-win-win'

May 21 2010

A home improvement scheme designed to increase energy efficiency in Wales has been hailed as a "fantastic" idea by a construction expert.

Director of the Building Research Establishment (BRE) Nick Tune has voiced his support of the new initiative, which intends to improve the energy efficiency of 6,000 houses by March 2011.

He said: "The investment … means that not only will families have significantly reduced energy bills, but new jobs will be created and CO2 will be reduced - it's a win-win-win."

His comments follow the announcement this week (May 17th 2010) of the details of the green home improvement scheme initiated up by the Welsh Assembly Government.

The £30 million project also aims to improve the renewable energy industry, create green jobs and provide a boost to the economy through savings caused by increased energy efficiency.

Last month, the Scottish government announced its new boiler scrappage scheme.

From May 24th, 5,000 households will be able to receive £400 towards the cost of a new greener boiler, which could reduce fuel bills by £190 a year.
