Prince Charles eager to save Romanian forests
Oct 27 2011
The Prince of Wales is keen to safeguard the environmental health of wooded areas in Romania, after claiming his ancestors include Vlad the Impaler.
Speaking in a new documentary about the Carpathian Mountains set to be aired on the Travel Channel, Prince Charles said he was keen to see the lush greenery in Transylvania protected as much as possible.
The area - which is famed for its Dracula mythology - is densely populated with forests, but vast swathes of trees have been chopped down to provide timber for the building industry.
He told the Romanians to take heed of the lessons learned in parts of Scotland and Canada, which have both seen their wooded land hacked down in the recent past.
“If we carry on the same way we end up with destruction occurring and people saying later on [that they] want this back," he remarked.
The World Wildlife Fund recently stated at a Global Forest & Trade Network initiative that forestry managers should look to eradicate illegal logging by 2020.
