Over 1,500 tonnes of nappies 'diverted from London landfills'

May 01 2009

The success of a reusable nappy scheme has resulted in 1,500 fewer tonnes of disposable nappies being sent to landfill sites in the London area, it has been claimed.

According to the Real Nappies for London scheme, an initiative which was founded to encourage parents to shun disposable nappies, the scheme has been successful in alleviating the pressure on landfill sites.

"It is exciting to see the impact of real nappies nearly two years down the line," Materials Recycling Week quotes coordinator of the project Nritijuna Naidun as stating.

She added: "In the last six months we have had a 77 per cent increase on the number of people signing up to the scheme, which we hope will have a significant impact on reducing waste."

Meanwhile, the Oxford Mail reports that parents in the area are also being encouraged to use washable nappies rather than disposables by The Oxfordshire Waste Partnership, which is currently marking Real Nappy Week.
