Obama's budget 'may see nuclear waste project scrapped'

Mar 11 2009

President Obama's proposed budget may mean that nuclear waste in the US has no where to be stored.

If the plans are carried out, the Yucca Mountain project in Nevada where the US nuclear industry's used fuel rods were to be placed may be scrapped.

President Obama has claimed that the controversial site raises environmental health issues as it is unclear whether storing the waste at Yucca Mountain is safe.

Although he decision is in keeping with one of his campaign promises, it raises questions about the safety of the radioactive waste which is currently mounting up at reactors in 25 of the nation's states.

US Rep Mark Steven Kirk said: "We are drifting toward a permanent policy of keeping extremely toxic waste next to the Great Lakes and that cannot stand."

It was recently reported by SILive.com. that a ballpark in Stanten Island has been closed for the forthcoming season after testing positive for radium contamination.
