New environmental legislation 'could help UK meet European targets'

Sep 24 2010

If the proposed Green Deal environmental legislation goes ahead, it could help the UK catch up with Europe in meeting targets.

This is according to Andrew Moore, founder of BritishEco, who said that the Green Deal has to be part of a "bigger picture" in improving efforts to tackle climate change in Britain.

The environmental legislation was conceived as a means to overhaul the energy efficiency of houses and businesses over the next 20 years, the Department for Energy and Climate Change announced earlier this week.

It will make energy efficient tools affordable for everyone and the government said this will help homeowners save money in the long-run.

Mr Moore stated that if it was implemented with other initiatives, then it could help the country come out from "behind the rest of Europe".

"On climate issues, we are the laughing stock of Europe really and we need to get going with it," Mr Moore added.
