MEP: New environmental legislation for developing countries needed

Oct 27 2009

Irish MEP Bairbre de Brun has called for a deal that provides support to developing nations as they look to adapt to climate change.

Ms de Brun made her remarks ahead of the United Nations Climate Change Conference, which is set to take place in Copenhagen between December 7th and 18th.

She stated that climate change is an issue that affects developing countries the most, when they are not in fact responsible for it.

Ms de Brun, a member of the European United Left/Nordic Green Left European Parliamentary Group, said: "An expression of genuine and practical solidarity is needed. Developing countries must be given the financial and technical support, on top of overseas development aid, to help them deal with climate change."

Concluding, she said that one of the important yardsticks in measuring the success of any deal reached in Copenhagen will be the extent to which it helps developing nations.
