Local residents outraged to learn recyclable waste is being sent to landfill
Apr 30 2012
Local residents in Ripon, North Yorkshire, were outraged to hear that recyclable waste is being sent to landfill by the local council.
Many companies in the area adhere to recycling policies, spending time and investing money to make sure that trade waste which can be recycled is being recycled. However, one local director recently learned that his efforts have been in vain, as the local council is simply sending it to landfill regardless.
Andy Taylor, who runs the small business LTC Healthcare in Boroughbridge, told Ripon Gazette that he was amazed to learn that trade waste he had paid Harrogate Council to collect was being “shoved in the ground”.
He said: “I’ve got a whole big pallet full of cardboard boxes and paper which should be recycled and instead it’s going to landfill at Allerton Park.”
This is making a mockery of the local council’s attempt to become environmentally-friendly, which is particularly important to councils in rural areas such as Ripon. With households and businesses making an effort to separate their waste, it has been quite a kick in the teeth for them to realise that some of this waste may be dumped in landfill.
