Liverpool businesses 'do their bit for the environment'

Jul 14 2010

Businesses in Liverpool are set to play their part in reducing their environmental impact by donating to green projects and air quality schemes across the city.

Liverpool Convention Bureau (LCB) has teamed up with climate fund for the north-west Foundation to encourage conference organisers to invest in local green initiatives.

Chief executive for Foundation Mark Turner said: "Carbon emissions are unavoidable when it comes to organising and hosting large events such as conferences and we hope that this new scheme will give people the chance to compensate for the environmental impact of their events."

Businesses will pay between £100 for a conference for up to 100 guests and £800 for an event with over 800 visitors.

The money will be put back into the region's environmental projects and used to fit solar panels and energy efficient boilers in community facilities.

Liverpool is not the only British city playing its role in tackling climate problems as Birmingham launched its Climate Change and Sustainability Cabinet Committee last month.

Its intentions are to reduce the city's carbon emissions by 60 per cent over the next 16 years.
