Government 'not meeting environmental legislation targets'

Dec 02 2010

The government has been criticised to not meeting targets set out in its own environmental legislation by an energy expert.

According to Alex Randall, spokesman for the Centre for Alternative Technology, the coalition needs to do more in order to achieve renewable goals.

He stated that in order to prevent climate change, the UK has a "clear ethical responsibility to act quickly".

However, Mr Randall slammed the government, saying: "The fact that the government is not even meeting their own less ambitious targets is disappointing."

The representative commented that it first needs to stick to original targets and then should make them more challenging, recognising that research has pointed out that the UK could be powered by renewable energy only by 2030 if goals are met.

Earlier this week, a report by the Committee of Public Accounts revealed that Britain has made slow progress in meeting energy targets over the last ten years.
