EUREAPA tool revealed
Dec 21 2011
The EUREAPA (EU Resource and Energy Analysis Programme Application) tool has been revealed at the Stockholm Environment Institute (SEI) at the University of York.
It will become a key tool for policy makers delivering the Flagship Initiative for a Resource-efficient Europe under the Europe 2020 Strategy.
The unique tool maps ecological carbon and water footprint data across all 27 EU member states, and has been developed by combining the integration of the Footprint Family of indicators with an economic model, which will help policy makers visualise the real impact of their legislation.
Four one planet economy (OPE) scenarios (which are designed to support policy makers in transforming Europe into a One Planet Economy by 2050) have been quantified by EUREAPA to explore the relative influence of different policy approaches on the EU’s carbon, ecological and water footprints.
Rachel Brown, OPEN:EU programme manager at WWF-UK, added: “This is a fantastic tool to help policymakers, NGOs and academics understand the impacts of our consumption patterns on the environment. We hope this will make it easier to evaluate the effect of different policy scenarios in inherently complex areas before bringing them into effect.”
