EPA returns to Alabama landfill

Sep 11 2009

In a bid to remove coal ash from an Alabama river and place it in a local landfill, US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) officials will be returning to the state next week.

A public forum designed to update residents about the current operation will take place at the Uniontown City Hall Auditorium and will involve representatives from the EPA, Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA), the Alabama Department of Environmental Management, Perry County and landfill operations company Phill-Con Services, which has bases in both Knoxville, Tennessee and Uniontown, Alabama.

EPA's Administrative Order on Consent with TVA requires that the coal ash from the TVA Kingston site be disposed of in accordance with the most stringent environmental legislation for municipal solid waste landfills, which the Arrowhead Landfill meets and exceeds.

Before approving the landfill, the EPA visited Arrowhead and met with local leaders and members of the Perry County community to review the disposal plan and answer any questions from residents.
