Environmental legislation 'should show expectations of green sector'

Apr 04 2011

Environmental legislation needs to clarify what can be expected of the green sector in the future, it has been said.

Dr John Constable, director of policy and research at the Renewable Energy Foundation, said the government needs to be clearer about where the market is going so that those in the field can understand the level of investment put into the industry.

"More honesty from government about what can be realistically expected from the green sector in the short-term would be very welcome and prevent disappointment later," said Dr Constable.

He stated that a "drastic" reduction in the demand for energy would result in achieving targets, which could raise questions over the environmental analysis of reaching green goals.

These objectives are likely to be even harder to accomplish after research conducted by the Pew Charitable Trusts revealed that investment in the UK renewables sector dropped by 70 per cent last year.
