Environmental legislation should encourage more investment

Oct 29 2010

Changes to environmental legislation which stipulate greater investment into renewable energy could be made after an expert suggested that more money needs to be put into the industry.

According to Alex Randall, a spokesman for the Centre for Alternative Technology, the use of green energy needs to be supported with greater finance.

"We will also need massive government investment in renewable energy infrastructure," he stated.

The expert added that instead of putting money into fossil fuels, the government should concentrate on investing in green energy.

"[We need environmental] legislation to stop new developments of the most polluting forms of energy generation," he added.

Echoing Mr Randall's comments, the executive chairman of the Scottish European Green Energy Centre Duncan Botting said that local authorities should help private industries to continually invest in renewable energy sources.

He stated that while the money is there to do so, councils are not making the most of their new powers.
