Environmental analysis news: UK is 'ahead of competitors in green transport'

Apr 27 2010

The UK is ahead of its competitors as far as green transport is concerned.

This is according to Philip Dilley, Chairman of London CBI and Group Chairman of engineering consultancy Arup, who said the country has "done well" in this area.

Speaking at the recent Ultra Green roundtable event, he noted that the move by former London mayor Ken Livingstone to introduce a congestion charge and allow electric cars into central London for free is a "good example".

"Nissan has an electric car battery plant here and Toyota has announced that it will manufacture the only hybrid cars outside of Japan in the UK," Mr Dilley commented.

Tony Blakely, founder and group executive chairman of Ultra Green, suggested that the green technology sector is likely to create a considerable number of jobs in the future.

Speaking at the same event, he noted that manufacturing wind towers in Britain could generate employment for around 100,000 people.
