Environmental analysis news: Met Office to launch new climate change monitor

Feb 26 2010

The Met Office has announced a new initiative to monitor global temperature levels, which is set to augment existing technologies.

Requiring work from across the international meteorological community, the Met Office is to present the idea to the World Meteorological Organisation to begin providing information on changing weather extremes and regional variability.

Surface temperature data sets will be updated and offered in more detail, information will be published on a daily basis and methods which are fully peer reviewed will be implemented in the new system.

"The new analysis will add to, and refine, the existing data sets which all show global and continental-scale multi-decadal trends of increasing temperatures," the Met Office said in a statement.

European Voice recently reported that ministers at the European Union will discuss the proposed introduction of legislation designed to curb the emissions rates of pollutants that cause acid rain and dust.
