Environmental analysis news: 'Bold decisions needed in resource management'

"Bold and brave" decisions will need to be made in terms of using the world's natural resources more efficiently, according to one environmental expert.

Richard Swannell, director of design and resource minimisation at Wrap, made his comments following the publication of a report by the Aldersgate Group, which called for the UK to become a more resource-efficient economy.

"Using our resources sustainably is one of the biggest challenges we face, both globally and as a nation," Mr Swannell asserted.

He pointed out that greater pressure is being exerted on a number of the country's natural resources, including food and water and stated that this must be recognised if progress is to be made.

Speaking at the launch of the report on February 1st, environment secretary Hilary Benn highlighted the business advantages of managing resources effectively, including reducing waste and cutting costs.

Mr Swannell also noted that making changes to the way in which resources are used will have a positive impact in the future, not just on the environment but also on social and economic levels.
