Construction industry needs skills to meet environmental legislation

People in the construction industry need to improve their skills if they are to meet environmental legislation targets, it has been suggested.

Earlier this week, CITB-ConstructionSkills voiced its concern that not enough building professionals will have the talents to deliver more environmentally-friendly buildings as part of the government's Green Deal.

Chief executive of the group Mark Farrar said the environmental legislation needs to address the importance of training professionals.

He stated: "If it fails to do so, we simply will not have the people with the right skills to deliver the 'greener' construction and built environment sector now required by upcoming legislation and regulation."

Mr Farrar went on to say that for the coalition to achieve its aims, construction workers need more awareness, better training and greater investment.

The Gazette Live also reported that building chiefs in Teesside are concerned the industry needs more money in order to meet environmental targets to make zero-carbon new constructions by 2019, with architect Ian McGregor saying that sustainable measures cost more to install.
