Compliance is crucial for developing nations
Jan 23 2012
Compliance with the Kyoto Protocol is essential for developing nations, according to Pa Ousman, who believes strengthening the collaboration with the G77 is crucial, according to EurActiv.com.
Mr Ousman, who is a top representative of the G77 group of developing nations, has pushed for a ten per cent increase on the EU's 2020 target of 20 per cent carbon emissions reduction target.
He believes the 30 per cent would be more affordable given the fall in European economic activity.
Canada's decision to withdraw from the Kyoto Protocol has sparked tense talks about how seriously developed nations are taking their carbon emissions goals. Global warming of over two degrees Celsius could be disastrous for countries within the G77, and the enforcement of global agreements seems to be the next 'big issue' after talks in Durban.
According to Mr Ousman: "The compliance regime needs to be more robust."
"It is difficult, because compliance has never been enforced in this multilateral process and it is somehow a bit loose. Hopefully we will put in place a very robust compliance regime post-2020."
Canada has reacted to the negative sentiment over their Kyoto decision by stating their intention to cut greenhouse gases in their own way. The newly elected party stated that they are doing more than the previous party who did sign the Kyoto plan.
