Christmas landfill waste expected to reach record highs

Due to waste generated by this year's Christmas season, including wrapping paper and gift packaging, landfill waste is expected to reach a new high in the UK.

The Waste and Resources Action Programme (WRAP) has claimed that there has not been enough emphasis on the recycling of Christmas packaging and wrapping paper in 2008, reported Recycle.co.uk.

Furthermore, it has warned that the waste generated by the 100 million gifts exchanged this year will not only have a negative impact upon the environment, but also on the public's pockets.

It is estimated that over 400 tonnes of carbon will be emitted by waste from the festive season as more than is necessary will go to landfill.

WRAP stated that toy companies have not offered clear enough advice on the recycling of packaging.

In international landfill news, prison authorities in Fiji have lodged a complaint with the country's department of environment due to odours emanating from the Naboro landfill site.
