Another oil spill threatens the environment
May 26 2010
A tanker and a bulk carrier crashed just off the coast of Singapore yesterday (May 25th 2010), resulting in thousands of tonnes of crude oil leaking into the water.
Speaking to Reuters, Malaysian coastguard Abdul Hadib bin Abdul Wahab said: "The collision caused a ten metre tear in the left side of the tanker and 2,000 metric tonnes of crude oil has spilled into the sea where the collision occurred."
Singapore's Maritime and Port Authority confirmed that the Malaysian-registered tanker Bunga Kelana 3, carrying light crude oil and condensate, was damaged in the collision resulting in the leak.
This comes just one month after an oil rig BP was operating on exploded in the Gulf of Mexico, costing the oil giant around $760 million (£527.6 million) so far.
